Essays by 40 Working Artists Conversation Book Event, featuring Jennifer Dalton and Sharon Louden
21c Museum Hotel

The information and data collected from our Living and Sustaining a Creative Life conversation tours, which began in 2013, have informed much of our services and programming. Specifics culled from attendees has clearly revealed what artists need and want in many communities across the country and abroad.

Facts and figures from the second tour (2017-2018) were compiled to form a case study that was shared publicly in different forums. One such exhibition was organized by Sharon Louden and artist, Jennifer Dalton - contributor to the first book, Essays by 40 Working Artists. Entitled, “Validation/Permission/Opportunity: Artists’ Voices Amplified,” the collaborative result was shown at the Berea Arts Council in Berea, KY, in August 2018 as part of an ArtistThrive! convening hosted by ISC partner, Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation.

What Do Artists Want, What Do Artists Need?

This treasure trove of data was culled from every question asked by audience members at each one of the 82 video-recorded panel discussions, symposia, and town-hall forums on the tour. The formal & informal information, data, and statistics from this study were visualized in the exhibition and has been shared with foundations, arts organizations, academic institutions, and other think tanks which are working for the betterment of artists and the important role they play in our lives.
