In stepping outside my studio, I have found that crossing over to the other side with my curatorial work, critical writing, and public programming both broadened my perspectives and deepened my understandings of how to contextualize artwork and how to amplify artists’ voices.
Developing course proposals brought me to twenty years of teaching, and public programming brought me to curating. Curating brought me to catalogue essays and critical writing. Time and aging brought me to legacy work.
As past Director of Exhibitions and Curator of Art at the Richmond Art Center, I worked with contemporary artists, historical figures and estates through which I developed a deep commitment to documentation and archives. Since then, I have been working with artists individually to develop legacy plans that include the following:
guiding the documentation of artwork
developing an inventory of artwork
creating an architecture for the archive
structuring a systematic approach to placement of artwork
…and even meeting with family members
Estate planning has a finite tone that seems to ring in a dark, distant future. But legacy planning is an important aspect of a studio practice. The many elements are woven in from the very beginnings of our lives as artists.
It is my pleasure and a privilege to mentor any artist at any stage to help secure their histories, their labors, and their visions.
